This first session explored two concepts together: the curatorial and
research. It focused on two issues: First, the issue of legitimation (How
to avoid legitimizing the curatorial as a field of research?), and the
issue of parity between academic and curatorial research. The second part
of this first session was dedicated to the reading of a text by Georges
Bataille. Through this reading, research in the field of the curatorial
became understood beyond all forms of production as a necessary form of
non-productive expenditure.
